Help, how can I stop my dog barking in the car while I’m driving!? That’s one of the most common questions we receive, and it’s a dilemma as you can’t drive and train your dog at the same time. But you can fix it! It starts with knowing why a dog is barking in the first place. It could be fear, excitement, anticipation, or maybe the dog is triggered by what they see out the car window.
In the episode you'll hear:
• All the reasons a dog might be barking while you are driving.
• How a video can help you diagnose why your dog barks.
• About using management for dogs who bark in cars.
• The reason to narrow down what might be triggering your dog’s barking.
• How eliminating rehearsals of the undesired behaviour is vital.
• What to do if you have two or more dogs barking while you are travelling in the car.
• That sometimes limiting your dog’s view out the windows can eliminate barking.
• Why to reinforce your dog for being quiet when in the car and ways you can set that up.
• About using negative punishment when there is a history of rich reinforcement for that which is correct.
• The strategy of stopping the car when your dog is barking in anticipation.
• Why you need to counter condition and desensitize your dog first.
• What to do if your dog is triggered by something when they are in the car.
• How to help a dog who gets overexcited about car trips and going places in the car.
• All the progressions to stopping your dog barking when you are driving.
• That barking is a conditioned behaviour and not a conscious response by your dog.

0:22.1 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. |
0:33.6 | Welcome to Shape by Dog. |
0:35.3 | First thing we want to do is diagnose as good as we can why the dog |
0:41.2 | is barking because there's likely a good reason. The first thing we want to eliminate is it fear? |
0:46.3 | Is your dog hovering like on the bottom of the car or if they're crated at the back of their |
0:51.4 | crate? Are they hovering back there and with obvious |
0:54.5 | signs of fear? If that's the case, go to podcast number 75 and work on counter conditioning |
1:01.0 | and desensitizing the thought of going in a car, the experience of driving in a car. So, |
1:06.3 | fear definitely, you don't want to continue to have a dog drive if they are fearful of driving. |
1:11.3 | Now you're going to say, no, my dog is not fearful. So, one of the best things you could do is |
1:16.7 | take a short trip and set up a video camera to capture what the dog is barking at or |
1:22.5 | are they just randomly barking? More than likely your dog is barking in anticipation of something or at the |
1:30.6 | sight of something. So, those are two separate things. If your dog is barking because of the |
1:35.0 | barrier frustration, there's another dog out there, there's a person out there, there's cars |
1:39.2 | going by. You need to just diagnose, is that what they're barking at? Are they bouncing from |
1:43.4 | window to window? Are they looking for they're barking at? Are they bouncing from window to window? |
1:44.7 | Are they looking at four things to bark at? Or are you taking them somewhere and they're really |
1:50.8 | super excited about it? Those are two separate things that we need to work through. Now, |
