Do you consider yourself a risk taker? Or maybe you play it safe? What about when it comes to your dog? We all want our dogs to be safe, but there’s one area in a dog’s life where people take highly dangerous risks, and that is when travelling in the car.

In the episode you'll hear:

• That I’m not risk aversive, except when it comes to my dogs.
• Why I decided to never take part in “go to ground” with my Terriers.
• The chances I won’t take with my dogs even though they are so well trained.
• About all the risks people take with how dogs travel in cars.
• Me implore you to please never drive with your dog in the back of a pickup truck.
• The dangers of driving with your dog’s head out the window.
• About how risky it is to drive with your dog on your lap on the front seat next to you.
• How dogs riding loose in the backseat can obsess, leading to anxiety, barrier frustration and aggression.
• That even the cargo area is not safe for you or your loose dog.
• How I set up my car crates and anchor them down out of the crumple zone.
• That a seatbelt attached to a genuinely approved car harness can be a way for your dog to travel in a car.
• About evaluating the risk when you go to put your dog in the car for a ride.

Do you consider yourself a risk taker? I'm not like risk aversive, but I'm not like crazy,

0:06.8

but I am a quick start. I don't tend to think things through before I jump into it. But

0:12.8

there's one area of my life. I take absolutely zero risks. And that is the topic of today's

0:19.4

podcast. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog.

You know, in 1999, I quit my six-figure-a-year job to do my hobby full-time. My late husband at that time

0:47.3

was like beside himself. He, he had sleepless nights. I didn't give it a second thought.

0:52.3

I wanted to be a full-time dog trainer. He thought that was a crazy high risk. I'm a risk taker. When I was 35 years old,

1:01.5

I gave my life savings to somebody who had this great idea of an investment and guess what?

1:09.0

Lost it all. Okay, that wasn't such a great risk. But, you know,

1:12.5

today I'm in my 60s. I'm a little wiser, but I still do crazy things in the gym and I love

1:17.9

riding down the Niagara escarpment super fast on my bicycle. So, I still kind of take risks,

1:23.4

but I got to tell you, my dog's life, I am overtly cautious about.

1:30.7

I take minimal risks and I take zero uncalculated risks.

1:36.2

And that's what I wanted to talk to you about today.

1:38.1

Because I see people taking crazy risks and I think, do they not realize the chances

1:44.1

they're taking with their dog?

1:45.2

I remember being at a seminar back in the 90s, it was learning go-to-ground with your terriers,

1:51.3

where the terriers would go hunting under the earth. And back then, I love to learn about

1:56.1

new sports with my dogs. And I remember this, I was at this seminar, this gentleman from England was presenting

2:01.8

and his first line of the seminar. I remember it as clear as day because it was there where I thought

2:07.9

I'm in the wrong place. Because he said, anyone who doesn't think their terrier is replaceable

2:15.2

shouldn't be hunting them. And I thought, well, anyone who thinks their terrier is replaceable, shouldn't be hunting them. And I thought, well, anyone who thinks
