If you were to get 100 of the world’s best dog trainers in a room, there would be a lot of disagreements. However, if you asked, “what’s the number one training mistake people make with their new puppy?” 99 of those dog trainers would give you the same answer. If you were to google, how do I get my puppy to stop, search results like stop peeing in the house, stop barking, and stop putting everything in their mouth, will be returned. These puppy behavior problems are related to the number one mistake dog trainers agree about: giving a puppy too much freedom.

In the episode you'll hear:

• Why puppies can’t have too much freedom without something bad happening.
• How puppy zones prevent the rehearsal of undesired behaviours.
• About the stages of puppy development related to giving freedom.
• How I utilize crates, ex-pens and baby gates for puppy zones and safety.
• The reason not to use a doggy door with your puppy.
• Why I want my puppies to learn alone time, pottying on leash, and listening indoors and outdoors.
• About sleep time, potty time, training time, eating time, exercise time and chill time for a puppy.
• Tips for structuring your morning schedule with a puppy to create success.

If you were to get 100 of the world's best dog trainers in a room together, there'd be a lot

0:05.7

they would disagree about.

0:07.6

However, I'd be willing to bet 99 of them would give you the same answer if you were to

0:12.4

ask them, what's the number one training mistake people make with their new puppy?

0:33.0

Yeah. puppy. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. And today, the topic is that number one thing. And here is something that I think is hysterical or sad or ironic.

0:40.0

If you were to Google, how do I get my puppy to stop and you allow Google to fill in the

0:47.0

most popular answers?

0:48.7

The three most popular answers I get is, how do I get my puppy to stop peeing in the house?

0:55.0

How do I get my puppy to stop barking so much? How do I get my puppy to stop putting

1:01.9

everything in their mouth? All three of those things are related to this number one mistake

1:08.2

most puppy owners make and that is they give their puppies too much freedom.

1:14.9

And I thought about this a lot because even though everybody says that, yet still here we are,

1:22.9

I talked to some friends of mine just last week who gave their puppy too much freedom, even

1:28.8

though I told them up front, this is the number one mistake people make. And I decided maybe

1:35.6

people don't know what that means. What does too much freedom means? And why is it that people

1:41.2

are making this mistake? And I have to think it's because they have a vision

1:46.0

of what their future will look like with this dog. The dog's going to, you know, hang out with the

1:52.3

family and they're going to sleep on the couch or sleep on their bed and they're going to go to

1:57.2

family events and just be such a cool dog to walk at night and after work.

2:02.9

But what you don't understand is you don't start out that way. You evolve to that way.

2:10.1

And so, yes, we might want our dogs to just have the freedom of the house and

2:15.4

and sleep on the couch and sleep on the bed. But puppies don't
