Summary

Why calorie counting fails — and why hunger, not willpower, drives eating behavior.

Episode #244

🎙️ If calories alone controlled weight, calorie counting would work. But it doesn't — because hunger is the real driver.

In this episode, Dr. Terri Lance is joined by Dr. Jason Fung to unpack why the traditional "eat less, move more" model fails so many people. They explain why calorie counting ignores the biology of hunger and how hormones, food quality, and different types of hunger determine whether calories are burned or stored. This conversation reframes weight gain as a biological process — not a personal failure — and lays the groundwork for understanding eating behavior through hunger regulation rather than willpower.

👉 What you'll learn:
• Why calorie counting fails for long-term weight loss
• How hunger — not willpower — drives eating behavior
• Why hormones determine whether calories are burned or stored
• The difference between homeostatic, hedonic, and conditioned hunger
• How ultra-processed foods disrupt satiety and increase hunger
• Why focusing on hunger leads to more sustainable results than restricting calories

The thing about the calories discussion is always that people think that calories is everything.

0:07.1

So it's all about calories.

0:09.0

A calorie is a calorie.

0:10.4

You hear it all the time and you've heard it for the last 50 years.

0:14.0

And the thing is that that's simply not true.

0:17.0

Because again, people always say, well, you just have to get into a calorie deficit.

0:22.6

And it's like, okay, so the calories in is what you eat.

0:25.9

The calories out is what you burn, your metabolic rate.

0:28.5

But you don't control your metabolic rate.

0:30.4

So if you simply eat fewer calories, your body could simply burn fewer calories and body fat will be unchanged.

0:37.4

So the question is, how does your

0:39.4

body distribute those calories?

0:45.9

Welcome back to another episode of the fasting method podcast. This is Terry Lance, and I am joined today with Dr. Jason Fung.

0:57.0

Jason, how are you doing today? Very good, Terry. Thanks. So I'm super excited to get to talk about

1:02.6

this, and I realize I keep saying that because I get so excited about these episodes.

1:07.9

We get to talk some more about The Hunger Code, your new book that's coming out.

1:12.9

And I know people are anxiously awaiting its release, waiting to get their hands on it.

1:18.3

And I feel very fortunate that I've gotten to start reading it and very exciting.

1:23.9

So we've talked in the past couple episodes a little bit about why the old model of weight loss

1:30.3

doesn't work, even though we keep being told that it's what we should be doing. And that is

1:35.9

eat fewer calories, burn more calories, and you'll have a deficit, which means weight loss.

1:43.1

And you really highlighted again why that does not work.
