Summary

Paris Marx, is the author of the incredible book, "Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation". In it, Paris does a comprehensive analysis of the recent wave of "new" mobility solutions created by the tech industry. From Uber to e-scooters to tunnels, and cars that are "autonomous" or can fly, the tech industry has promised to solve all of our traffic issues. But have they? Can they? The book does an excellent job at looking at numerous recent transportation trends and showing what they promised to do, if they succeeded, and whether the ideas are new at all. It also looks at the larger macro effects some companies have had on our lives and politics, and what we could be doing better. On this episode we talk about why bigger freeways don't help congestion; how Uber made things worse; why the tunnels were really built; the brief life of autonomous cars; and what we should do better to improve live for everyone. Where else Paris have we vastly overestimated what technology can do for us?

What have we not covered yet that you're thinking about right now?

Where to start?

0:16.9

I think in many areas, right? I think it's a common problem that we tend to assume that

0:22.9

because we have whatever problem it is in society, that we need to turn to technology as the

0:29.4

solution, right? We need to kind of step back, wait for the tech industry and technology to

0:34.3

improve itself, and then that is going to solve whatever problem it is that we're trying to address

0:39.1

or to deal with. And I think that that gets the whole thing wrong, right? And I think that we are,

0:45.0

having this realization that the tech industry can't deliver these things, and certainly technology

0:50.0

has a role to play in making things better, but we also need the politics to accompany that

0:54.2

so that the benefits of these technologies are being shared broadly in society instead of just

1:00.1

going to these CEOs and what have you. What's up everybody? Welcome to the Smoking Tire podcast.

to make new stuff, expanding your repertoire. It's great. Traditionally, what happens if you love

1:27.9

to be a home cook, but you're a busy person and you work a lot like me. I fall into the same habits.

1:34.5

I make the same five or six things over and over because I can do it without thinking. I know how

1:40.6

long it's going to take. I don't have to buy a whole bunch of crazy expensive spices and ingredients

1:46.2

that are going to sit on a shelf for a year or that I'm going to waste because I have to over

1:50.6

buy because I'm only cooking for two people. Hello Fresh solves all that problems. You can say

money on your dinner with Hello Fresh. You can put it towards your shopping. It's cheaper than
