Summary

The Liberal Democrats began their 2024 campaigning this week by unveiling a huge poster branding them as ‘Ed Davey’s Tory Removal Service’, but they will have to be more than just the 'none of the above party' if they hope to make a difference come the election. What do the Lib Dems stand for? And can they turn by-election success into election success?

Oscar Edmondson speaks to James Heale and Nick Tyrone, author of the This Week in Brexitland substack.

After a string of by-election successes, could this be the year that the Lib Dems do cut through

0:39.3

and we see the return of three party politics?

0:41.7

So James, starting with you, the liberal Democrats

0:44.3

kicks off their campaigning in Guilford this week with a huge poster branding

0:48.3

them as Ed Davies Tory removal service. Do you think the not tory message is a strong enough one going into an election year?

0:57.0

Well I think we saw a perfect encapsulation of what the Lib Dems year is going to be all about this week which is in an area like

1:04.2

Guilford pitching themselves very simply as getting rid of the Tories and that's

1:07.9

their strategy really. I think it's all done as a direct contrast of 2019 when I

1:11.9

think there was a policy of Project 320

1:14.7

of targeting enough seats to win the actual election and obviously they ended up

1:18.4

with I think it was 10 or 11 last 11 seats last time and so this time they're very much more focusing on a

1:25.3

handful also about 20 seats and trying to get about 30 and of course on my hand

1:30.4

you think what's wrong with that any party that doubled their seats overnight from 15 to 30.
