Businesses have been eating President Donald Trump's tariffs, but now that's changing.

New data out today shows U.S. inflation on the wholesale level picked up steam last month,

with prices rising by the fastest monthly pace since June 2022.

To break down what this means for the economy, here's CNN's Alicia Wallace.

So the producer price index shot up by 0.9% in July.

That's far exceeded the 0.2% monthly uptick that was projected by economists.

This report shows the change in prices that businesses pay each other,

and it's considered an indicator for what you and I might see here in the months to come.

So in that regard, this doesn't bode well.

Economists tell me that a wider array of businesses, including those in the food industry,

are facing higher costs due in part to pricey
