Welcome back, Tom Harbin here with you, and should the death ceiling be abolished?

And will the GOP dig in on slashing social security and Medicare?

These appear to be the big questions of the day now that it's starting to hit the mainstream media

that Republicans are desperately trying to figure out how to put together a budget or legislation

to overcome the death ceiling that would dial back on social security and Medicare.

One of the proposals that Republicans seem to be very fond of is raising the retirement age

for Social Security and Medicare from the current 65 for Medicare and 67 for Social Security,

raising it up to 70. That's brilliant, right? That's going to be really popular.

It's fascinating to watch this play out because in 1990, whatever year it was,

five I think it was, when New Gingrich first dredged up this 1917 Liberty Bond law, which

established the so-called death ceiling. It had never been used as a political weapon before.

I mean, Congress just routinely every year, it was just an accounting thing, you know, yeah,

yeah, yeah, I'll raise the death ceiling. And New Gingrich went to war against Democrats.

I'm an absolute war. Now, truth be told, that war had been first declared by Ronald Reagan in 1981
