Like most students, Luke didn't spend every night studying at the library.

Most of the semester, he managed his workload

well enough to get by with shorter study sessions during the day. But once the middle of the term

rolled around, an exam started creeping up on the calendar, the library suddenly became a place

he visited far more often. That night had been one of those nights. By the time the announcement came over

the speakers that the library would be closing in 15 minutes, Luke had already been sitting

at the same table for several hours. Around him, other students began packing up laptops and

notebooks with a quiet resignation of people who knew they would probably be back again the next

evening. Luke stuffed his notes into

his backpack and slung it over one shoulder as he followed the small stream of students heading

toward the exit. Outside the campus had settled into the kind of calm that only appeared late at night.

The sidewalks that had been crowded earlier in the evening were mostly empty now, and the wide walkways between buildings stretched out beneath the yellow glow of the street lights.

Luke lived in one of the dorms on the north side of campus.

The walk back from the library took about ten minutes, cutting across the central part of the university, before reaching the cluster of residence halls

where most of the freshmen and sophomores lived.

He had taken that same route dozens of times.
