Summary

The Tory leadership race has begun. Some candidates, like Steve Baker and Suella Braverman, have already declared that they will be running. Others, like Nadhim Zahawi, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, are expected to announce their candidacy in the coming days.

What are their platforms? How many MPs will hopefuls need to have supporting them to make it onto the ballot? What should the party look for in a new leader? Katy Balls speaks to Fraser Nelson and James Forsyth.

Produced by Max Jeffery.

Hello and welcome to Coffee House Shots' Spectators Daily Politics podcast.

I'm Katie Balls and I'm joined by James Forsyth and Fraser Nelson.

Boris Johnson has announced that he will be leaving 10 Downing Street for now

0:30.0

he is still Prime Minister and I look so he could be the caretaker Prime Minister

0:34.0

until a new leader is announced and while the leadership contest has not officially started

0:39.2

there's plenty of maneuvers to go through. James just to kick things off can you update

0:43.8

us on Boris Johnson's position and whether it looks as though he will be there for weeks to come.

So I think the compromise appears to be this that Boris Johnson will stay as Prime Minister

0:52.2

until probably the first Monday in September by which point the truly leadership contest will be

0:57.5

and essentially the deal is he's allowed to stay as Prime Minister if he doesn't try and change

1:02.5

policy. I understand that was a discussion at Cabinet yesterday where Jacob Rees Morgh was

1:07.4

pushing for changes to the windfall tax on gas releases in the North Sea and basically the view

1:14.1

at the Cabinet table was but those people who agreed to join the Cabinet basically said we can't

1:21.1

have any new policy so we're just going to kind of keep the things ticking over on the

1:26.4

pre-existing course. I think Boris Johnson started trying to make new policy then I think there

1:33.6

would be a renewed push to say look something's got to be done. I think people are very aware of

1:38.6

the view that you know that Boris Johnson shouldn't be spending money that could be better spent

1:45.0

by his successor. And Fraser where are we at now in the leadership contest which is not officially

1:52.6

begun. We obviously had the spectators some a party last night and quite a few candidates there
