Summary

It's easy to place blame on outside influences for the unfavorable things that take place in our lives. However, when we take responsibility for ourselves, we then are accountable for the positive change we want to happen in our lives and no longer depend on others to make those changes for us. Hi it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace and to Friday morning the end of the week.

So a few days back I was chatting with a good friend of mine and he was giving me an

0:24.0

update on his life and spoken so much and he was telling me sort of about what was going

0:29.0

on with his work and at one point he stopped and he just said ah people seriously and it

0:36.5

made me smile in the sense that we all maybe have a temptation at a time to look outside of ourselves

0:44.8

and it reminded me of a very particular story in a monastery that I actually spent some time

0:50.8

in and there was a particular area there which was put aside for retreat before it became a

0:59.3

monk's retreat it was a nun's retreat and it was in talking to one of the nuns that I found out

several miles to even get there obviously no roads no traffic and you really feel a sense of

1:17.3

isolation down there normally there's probably a handful of people staying in these houses doing

1:23.8

sort of long-term retreat normally a year or more and there's one time a day where everybody gets

together and you share a little bit of lunch and often if the sun is shining you might get your

1:42.1

in there the nuns are having their lunch and suddenly a door has slammed and this nun comes sort

1:47.8

of storming out and walks down the driveway and just says they're all effing mad apart from me

1:53.5

and in that moment well one you might be surprised that a nun might be expressing themselves in

1:59.0

that way you needn't be surprised monks and nuns are just human beings wearing different clothes

2:04.3

and with a different hairstyle admittedly trying to find an environment where they can train

2:08.7

their mind but still very much human beings but it was more what she said the idea that everyone

2:15.6

else in the world is mad apart from ourselves I think is a really interesting idea and I think

2:23.3

something that may creep into our minds creep into our lives more often than we think the tendency for
