Summary

Emily’s view on pest control changed when beneficial insects arrived in her garden. Pests are not necessarily a problem to fight. Instead, the approach is more about patience and allowing the garden ecosystem to balance itself without human intervention. Actually one of the things

0:03.7

of the things that does come up with gardening too that a lot of people

0:17.3

struggle with are pests and I love this idea of you know like are we the pests or like who is here first like what's going on so I'd love to talk about your solution and thoughts around pests and like how you deal with it in the garden.

0:33.0

Well when I first started gardening I was so invested in it

0:38.0

emotionally and financially and all of the above that if anything moved in my garden, it died.

0:46.0

I was like, no, this is my garden.

0:49.8

And I just had this like kill it with fire attitude.

0:52.1

And so that was just straight out the gate. I just

0:54.3

straight out the gate and then somewhere along the way I realized wait a minute like I

0:58.6

think there's some food chain and some semblance of how things work in nature and like

1:04.2

nature does it really well I live right on the edge we have some woods behind us and

1:07.8

kind of see how things work in tandem and so I started that was when I really began my journey into organic gardening.

1:16.0

And the reason for that was I realized that, you know, for example, if I left the aphids long enough, I would see a big influx of ladybugs or if I

1:27.0

left the tomato hornworms you know I would have some parasitic was for something come in and so that was so interesting to me that that began that that was what became most important to me was like let me see how I can most do things like nature does it. So now I don't I don't really do much of anything other than

1:49.8

companion planting and adding in you know know, pollinators and herbs and things like that.

1:56.0

And I think so like this question of like pests in the garden is one that is always going to

2:02.3

exist and it's it's so interesting because I think everyone's approach at first to some extent is like how do I how do I fight this problem like it's here and I'm ready to go to war.

2:15.0

And at the beginning like even I had that approach right?

2:17.6

It's like oh, oh like I must have done something to fail like now

2:21.8

these aphids are all over my plants.

2:24.0

And over the years, much like yourself, I mean, from the very first season,

2:28.1

I was not an organic gardener.
