Summary

Rishi Sunak may have shelved his plan for a big reshuffle but we have had some cabinet changes today. Grant Shapps has taken his fifth cabinet position in one year, replacing Ben Wallace as Defence Secretary, and Sunak loyalist Claire Coutinho will take over as Energy Secretary. What does Coutinho’s appointment reveal?

James Heale speaks to Fraser Nelson and Katy Balls.

Hello and welcome to Coffee House Shots. I'm James Hill and I'm joined today by Katie

0:26.1

Balls and Fraser Nelson. Katie, we've got a few cabinet changes today. Talk us through what's happened.

0:31.7

So two major ones, I mean ultimately it's still the case as we write in the magazine this week that

0:37.2

they'll plan for a wide, a big reshuffle, a big pre-election reshuffle that has been shelved.

0:42.8

It may happen after the party conference that idea being they didn't want to have what tends

0:47.0

to happen with reshuffers which is lots of very angry people because they really mean sacked or

0:51.6

actually sometimes actually worse than being sacked for like you're missing out on your chance of

0:55.3

greatness which is often how Tory MPs feel after reshuffers. So the more expensive one has been put off,

1:01.6

we don't think indefinitely but no firm date exactly and instead what we've had today is

1:07.0

ultimately doing what they had to do which is replacing Ben Wallace because he had made quite

1:12.4

clear that he wanted to go to the back bench just before quitting as an MP at the next election

1:17.6

and they've announced grandchaps, a very seasoned minister to be the new secretary of state for

1:22.8

defence and then to replace the vacancy of the grandchaps left as energy secretary we have

1:28.4

Claire Katino who is the first of the 2019 intake to make cabinet and I think that's probably

1:34.5

in some ways the more eye catching of the promotions because it is a big jump in terms of going

1:40.0

from a fairly junior minister in the department for education to secretary of state and being around

1:45.3

the cabinet table and then in her place because she has been moved up you know how David Johnson

1:51.6

and he was a PPS to Michael Gove who is now taking on Katino's role in the Department of Education.

1:57.2

And Fraser the defence role really I think came back into prominence last year with the invasion
