When conservatives wax poetic about their favorite Supreme Court justices from what one

might call the Federalist Society era of Republican appointments, Clarence Thomas and the late Antonin

Scalia tend to take precedence. The oldest may prefer the late William Rehnquist, for a time the

lone originalist on the court, while the youngest may prefer Neil Gorsuch, the libertarian radical

appointed by President

Donald Trump in 2017. But today's guest argues for Samuel Alito, appointed as George

W. Bush's second choice for the vacancy created by the retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor

in 2005, as perhaps the most consequential of them all. Molly Hemingway, editor-in-chief of the Federalist,

joins us to discuss her latest book, Alito,

the Justice who reshaped the Supreme Court and restored the Constitution.

It's great to be here with you, Michael.

So why write about Justice Alito?

Well, it's kind of related to what you just said about how everyone talks about these other justices.

And they are worthy of being talked about.

They are interesting figures.

And they have had quite an effect on the jurisprudence of the court.

Antonin Scalia is one of the fathers of that originalist movement that

made people really think about what the original meaning of the Constitution was and what those

words in the Constitution meant at the time of the founding. And Justice Thomas is one of America's

greatest people who's ever been in the country and has been such an example for how to be principled in the face of unbelievable attack.
