John the Baptist exemplified humility in his identity. Understanding who we are not can bring freedom. John's mission was to prepare the way for Jesus. Real influence is about pointing others to Jesus. We must clear the way for God to move in our lives. Humility is essential in our interactions with others. 0:00.0	Hey friends, I'm Rachel Grohl and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.
0:11.7	Have you ever noticed when people are meeting for the first time, adults, that one of the first questions is what do you do?
0:20.7	Well, have you ever had to explain who you are without saying what you do?
0:25.2	It's harder than it sounds because many of us are quick to describe ourselves based on our roles.
0:30.7	I'm a teacher. I'm a mom. I'm a student. A nurse.
0:34.6	But what happens when someone challenges us with a deeper question? Who are you really?
0:41.4	Well, that's exactly what happens to John the Baptist in today's passage. He wasn't trying to gain a
0:46.5	following for himself or build a platform or anything like that. He wasn't looking to elevate his
0:52.3	own voice, even though what he said was powerful. And in fact,
0:56.4	when religious leaders came to question him, all he wanted to do was point people to Jesus.
1:02.4	I think that's important because in a world that constantly pushes us to define ourselves by things
1:07.0	like our title or our job or our opinion even.
1:11.7	You know, in this political climate, one of the biggest telltale signs of who you are
1:16.9	as a person apparently is who you voted for.
1:20.0	I think within that context, the example that we get here in this passage is really refreshing.
1:26.5	Because when he's asked to explain his identity, he didn't say, I'm John the Baptist, the
1:31.6	prophet, or I'm the voice of revival.
1:36.2	He said, I'm not Jesus.
1:39.2	And I think that posture of humility is what made room for Jesus.
1:43.7	And so we're going to be walking through
1:44.9	the second half of John chapter 1 versus 19 through 28. And this is the passage where John the
1:50.7	Baptist prepares the way for the Messiah. And so we're going to take a look at his interactions with
