Hi, from CNN. I'm Fez Jameel with the five things You Need to Know for Monday, August 17th.

We start with today's summit at the White House, where European leaders, including

Ukraine's, will meet with President Donald Trump.

This comes off the back of Trump's meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin in

Alaska on Friday, where it was hoped a ceasefire for Ukraine would be reached, but that didn't happen.

In fact, Trump envoy Steve Whitkoff says Trump is now focused on securing a peace deal

without pursuing a ceasefire, with Whitkoff telling CNN that they did get the ball rolling

on collective defense for Ukraine.

We covered almost all the other issues necessary for a peace deal.

So I described the ceasefire as the interim move where you would then negotiate towards

a peace deal.

We made so much progress at this meeting with regard to all the other ingredients necessary

for a peace deal that President Trump pivoted to that

place.
