About a decade ago, my dad and I ended up crashing at a

co-worker's place in a small industrial town while he sorted out some family stuff.

It was a temporary setup, a cramped duplex on the edge of a noisy rail yard, with trains rattling

by day and night. The place was nothing special,

peeling paint, mismatch furniture, the kind of spot that you would expect someone scraping by from.

At first, everything seemed okay though, just a bit dreary with the constant hum of the yard outside.

But after a couple of weeks, things started getting weird, especially in the spare room

where I'd set up my air mattress.

It's hard to explain, but the vibe in there just sort of shifted.

And what started as vague unease turned into something that

I still cannot shake. The trouble began with these reoccurring dreams, more like night terrors

really, but hit me almost every night. In them a blurry, faceless shape would appear, not quite human, more like a smudge of grey mist roughly shaped like a person.

It did hover at the edge of the room, near the closet door, and mutter a single question over and over in this low, scratchy voice.
