This happened about a year and a year and a half ago when I was 20.

At the time I was working evenings at a small cafe in a shopping district near the train station that I lived by.

It wasn't the busiest place and on slow nights the manager trusted me to close by myself.

I usually finished around 10.30pm and

walked home since I lived close. On this particular night, things were unusually quiet, I would

say. Around 1015, just as I was stacking chairs and wiping tables, the bell above the door jingled and a man walked in.

That already felt strange. Nobody ever came in that late except the occasional regular grabbing a coffee to go or something.

But this guy, he wasn't a regular. He looked mid-30s, maybe early 40s, neat jacket, clean-shaven, but

something about him felt immediately off. He didn't order coffee or food, and instead he asked

if he could have an empty paper cup. I hesitated, but gave him one, thinking that maybe he just needed some water.

But instead of heading to the counter or the bathroom, he walked straight to a corner table,

set down a small bag and pulled out a glass bottle.

Not wine, not beer, but it looked like some kind of hard liquor, I would guess.
