This morning's 10-minute walk starts with a chorus of tree frogs.

They're in the trees and the undergrowth, maybe a dozen yards away as I begin the walk.

When I was in third grade, my family moved from Glenburn, Maryland to Lentheum, Maryland.

Elementary School. Maybe a month or two after I started, there was a school-wide assembly.

So everyone met in the auditorium for a puppet show. And I was really, really excited. Not because I loved puppet shows,

which I did, but that wasn't the cause of the excitement. I was really excited because the

people doing the puppet show, the puppeteers, were my grandparents. And it was so great to sit in this group with hundreds of other children who were being

entertained by Paul's puppets, my grandparents.

They were professional puppeteers.

Back in the 30s, they did a puppet show at the White House for the grandchildren of President Franklin Roosevelt.

And my grandfather tells the story that the electrical system at the White House was not compatible with their record player.

And they needed the record player for the music that they would play during the puppet show.

So he tells the story of him and Eleanor Roosevelt walking through the White House living quarters trying to find a record player that they could use.
