I've been out walking for a little bit before pressing record on my iPhone.

Temperature is below normal, a little breezy, not super windy, but just enough that

with the low temperatures I can feel it. And I've got my heavier gloves that I'm wearing,

along with my heavier ski cap. I've got insulated socks and these heavier gloves, which usually keep my hands

warm, but for whatever reason, they're not quite doing the job this morning. So what I've actually

done is taking the gloves off. They're in my coat pocket. And I've got my hands in my pants pockets

up against my legs. So I'm getting some warmth there.

Having the right gear makes all the difference.

If you want to continue pursuing fitness, when the weather is challenging, maybe too cold, too wet, too snowy.

If you have the right gear and you can remain somewhat comfortable as you're out walking and certainly safe when the temperature is extreme in either direction, it can make all the difference between, yep, I'm going to keep my fitness promise and not so much.

In 2013, early 2013, I got my first Fitbit, and I was off to the races with walking as a fitness activity.

That Fitbit fueled my motivation in ways that I really didn't anticipate. It was all about the steps, all about

walking, all about getting out and challenging myself to go even further. And because of that,

anytime I had the opportunity to walk, I was taking it. I learned how to take advantage of what I called pockets of time when I would be waiting for my car's oil to be changed.

Instead of sitting in the waiting room, I'm up walking around.

At the time, I was the program director of the radio station where I worked and had opportunity

to take some business trips throughout the year.

And in the fall of 2013, I was in New York.

My radio station was in Baltimore, but I was on a trip to New York. It was a two-night, three-day trip.
