The story is, is there was a very, very famous comedian in the late 90s, the winner of Star Search,

a guy named Vincent, V-I-N-S-O-N champ. He was an African-American man, very good-looking, super funny.

And one of the things that he would talk about is that his voice didn't sound African-American to whatever, you know, stereotypes are popular back then.
