Summary

Dealing with mental health issues when it comes to a loved one can be extremely difficult — for everyone involved. Learning what you should do and what you should not do to help anyone one with a mental illness can get super complicated. The guilt we feel can be so consuming. Wanting to save those who are suffering can turn into codependence — which isn't healthy for anyone.

Today, Chalene shares her thoughts on this sensitive topic. Without going into too much personal information, she reveals that she, too, is dealing with a loved one who suffers from mental illness. And she'll share ways in which she has learned to process and cope.

Please remember, Chalene is not a mental health expert or a therapist. These are just her own personal thoughts and opinions. Think of this episode as a venting session with a close friend.

You don't need to have any previous business experience. You do, however, need to have a desire and a dream to want to create additional income, a side hustle, a business online, something that you can call your own. This doesn't mean you've got to quit your job.

0:35.0

It doesn't mean you've got to be the boss to a team of 50 people, but it does mean that you are excited about the opportunity that's open to everyone.

This event is so fun. People are so excited to see each other. You're going to meet tons of other pods, squatters. It's going to be people just like you who are nervous, but also excited and feel like they have no idea what they're doing, but they're ready for the challenge and excited to do some dancing because it's not like a normal seminar where you're sitting in chairs the whole time.

We do lots of dance breaks. It's very fun. Every speaker comes with and they're going to give you an action plan. So like after they tell you what they did and how they did it, they're going to give you an action plan. Step one, step two, step three, it's exciting. It's motivating. It's Orange County. We're right down the street from Disneyland. I know this has been on your bucket list. So do it. Why not? What do you have to lose?

So today, I want to talk about mental health and the impact that it has on a family and friends when someone you care about is really struggling with their mental health.

2:15.0

My name is chaline. This is a chaline show. And I just want to state this like upfront. I have never struggled with my mental health in the way that we're going to talk about today. I'm not a therapist. I'm not a licensed psychologist. I'm not having an expert on the show today. Like this is one of those episodes where I'm just going to share my opinions, my experiences, my true feelings.

2:36.0

And I just need you to know, like, if you are the person who is struggling with your mental health, or it has been an ongoing struggle for you and you already have so much guilt associated with it. If it already just eats you up inside knowing that your mental health has had and does continue to take a toll on your family that they worry about you, all those things.

2:57.0

I'm begging you right now not to listen to this episode because you don't need that because I can't possibly know what it's like to be in your shoes. I'm really recording this episode for those people who are kind of on the other side of it, like dealing with someone who's mental health, they just desperately want to fix it for them and they can't.

3:15.0

So again, I want to say trigger warning, whatever warnings you need in place, we're going to talk about some really heavy mental health issues in this episode. I can't promise you any solutions. And most importantly, I just don't think it would be safe for you to listen to this episode if you're someone who is struggling with their mental health.

3:34.0

And please take this that warning seriously. I promise there are better uplifting things for you to listen to today. There's so many other great new podcasts out there. There's older episodes. I think I've done like close to 900 episodes here on the Shaleen shows. So just like basically you can type in any topic in my name. And I've probably done an episode on it. If not, you don't listen to my show. There's other great shows for you to listen to. But that's what we're going to talk about today. So thank you for taking that warning seriously. Let's get to it.

4:04.0

So you might wonder why would you do an episode, actually, and that's really just geared toward the family and friends of people who are dealing with mental health and not create the episode for the person who is dealing with the mental health.

4:16.0

Well, in part because and again, I'm probably going to say a whole bunch of things in this episode that are ill informed, unprofessional, short-sighted, you know, like all the things because I'm just like literally sharing my own personal experience.

4:31.0

And it's limited to that. It's limited to my own personal experience and observations that I've made of, you know, people who write into the show, people who are in my own life, who've had to experience us in my personal observation is that we often talk about and focus on the person with the mental health issues.

4:51.0

And we forget how much of a toll it takes on the people around that person, friends, family, your spouse, your kids, your coworkers. So these people often are forgotten, you know.

5:07.0

You feel guilt to even say that it's hard on you when you know the person who is suffering is in a very volatile, vulnerable position and it's delicate. It's almost like everything has to be centered around that person because well, in most cases, not all, but like in many cases, it's no fault of their own.

5:28.0

It might be a chemical imbalance. It might be something that is genetic. It may be as a result of traumas, which again, it's not their fault, but they're suffering. And when someone we love is suffering, we suffer. There's just no way around that. And you almost feel like you can't say that or express that because you know the guilt that it will make that person feel.

5:51.0

And you just, you don't want to make things worse. You don't want to make it about you. So we need a term. So I don't have to keep saying the friends, family, loved ones, significant others who are in that close circle that surrounds and wants to support the person who's dealing with the mental health.

6:08.0

So let's call that the flow circle. Friends, family, loved ones. Yeah, FFLO. Yeah, let's call that the flow circle.
