Because he's then eligible for it for the first time.

Will they pick up the fifth-year option?

By the way, it's very possible, and I already talked about this,

that they pick up the fifth-year option, but then they work towards a long-term

deal in the offseason, 2027. And that long-term deal could happen before the May 1st deadline

for the fifth-year option, or it could happen after. You pick up the fifth-year option,

it doesn't stop you from negotiating a longer-term deal.

It just guarantees you that if you don't get a long-term deal done, that the fourth season

won't be the last season for the player. I think you'll end up with long-term contract

extensions for Caleb Williams, Drake May, and Jaden Daniels in the offseason

of 2027. And I think the idea that the fifth year option, if they didn't sign them to a long-term

deal, wouldn't get picked up, is insanity. But that's what Jason and emailer suggested was a possibility,

which is why we're talking about this, because we are a year away.

And we obviously will have a lot more information, as in a full season of information and data to pull from.
