The first time Sarah said the closet was talking to her, her parents assumed it was the kind of thing young children say when they are still half living in imagination. She was five years old then, old enough to describe what she meant,

but still young enough that most nighttime fears could be explained away by shadows, unfamiliar sounds,

or a mind that had not quite learned the difference between what was real and what was simply possible.

The house itself did little to help with that distinction.

It was older than most of the homes on the street built before the neighborhood had filled in around it.

The floors shifted slightly when the weather changed, and certain doors needed to be pulled firmly to latch.

At night the house made quiet sounds that were easy to ignore during the day, but seemed louder after everyone had

gone to bed. Sarah's room sat at the end of the hallway. It wasn't large, but it had a tall window

and a narrow closet built into one wall with a sliding door that rattled softly when it

moved along its track. During the day, it was an ordinary space where her dresses hung beside a row

of small shoes she had already outgrown. At night, it was darker than the rest of the room.

Her mother first heard about the closet while brushing Sarah's hair one evening before bed.

Sarah was sitting cross-legged on the edge of the mattress, still warm from a bath, when she said it in a

quiet, matter-of-fact voice, and she said the closet talked when it thought she was asleep.

At first her mother smiled, expecting a story about creaking wood or tree branches against the side of the house.

She asked Sarah what she meant.

Sarah pointed to the closet door.

She said it said things.

When asked what kind of things, Sarah shrugged slightly.
