Summary

Pastor J.D. would obviously have lunch with Nicolas Cage, but who are the others? They just might surprise you.

A glimpse inside this episode:

* Adoniram Judson: A broken heart for the lost and wicked smart. HIs biography To The Golden Shore was one of the most formative in my life. I even named my son, Adon, after him. I hope to follow him back overseas one day.
* Martin Luther: How could I not mention him? What I love most about him is how real and authentic he was. He was funny and didn't take himself too serious.
* Charles Spurgeon: I'd like to have lunch with him once. Such a scholar but also tender. He knew when to give theology and when to weep with his members. A couple of my favorite possessions are his actual sermon notes, his handwritten notes, that were given to me.

Bonus: Shelby Steele: African American sociologist. Keen insight into a lot of the racial issues of today.
Bonus: Michael Jordan: I was a boy in North Carolina, how could I not love him?

And Pastor J.D. explains the root of his adoration for Nic Cage.

I'm your host, Todd Unzicker, and this is where J.D. Greer. I'm your host, Todd Unzicker, and, you know, Jady, we say you answer the toughest theological, ethical, moral questions. This week, I want to know what you, folks who shape you or folks you find interesting. So this week, the question is, what three people, dead or alive, would you want to have lunch with? That's it. That's it. Like no, you know, Calvinism, white privilege. Nope. Nothing

controversial. Just three people dead or alive that you'd want to have lunch with. Well, I would say you,

1:02.6

but you always made me pay. So I think I've kind of gotten tired of going out to lunch with you.

1:07.9

And we're having lunch tomorrow, just so you know. And I'll probably be paying. That's right. I'm sure. Um, yeah, well, I actually right now, after asking me that

1:14.1

question, I kind of feel like the person who asked this question, I'd like to take out to lunch

1:17.7

because after what, 20 some of questions that I'm like, right. Three people dead or alive. Well, the first one I feel like I have to go to is Adonairm Judson. He was one of the first American missionaries. There was another guy named George Lyle who went down into the Caribbean to be a missionary. But Adon Arm Judson was this. I mean, he was just a guy, you know, broke for the lost. And reading his

1:45.6

biography to the Golden Shore was one of the most formative things in my, in my life. And then I

1:50.7

handed it to my wife. Or at that point, we were just, we were just dating. And because I was

1:56.1

feeling like I was called the mission field. You're so romantic. You give her novels on dead

2:00.5

missionaries when you're

2:01.6

dating. I was like, hey, read this. And it just tore her up. Both of us just, you know,

2:06.8

kind of resolved at that point, like, you know, God, we hope that at some point, right now we

2:10.8

serve in the United States, but we hope, you know, someday to at least end our career overseas.

2:15.6

I mean, I don't know. but anyway, we named our son,

2:19.0

Aden, short for Adonairn. And so he's just always had a very formative. In fact, even going

2:24.6

before that, that biography, when I became a Christian, I was 16 years old, the first biography

2:29.3

put in my hands was the story of Adonairm Judson. And just, I mean, I mean, missions is tough now, but when he did it, I mean, he got

2:37.9

on a boat and landed in Burma, what is, you know, now Myanmar and just translated the

2:43.4

Bible for six or seven years and it was six or seven years before he found a, you know,
