Summary

Famed—and infamous—talk show host Jerry Springer died yesterday at the age of seventy-nine after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. But while those who knew him well recall a man committed to his Jewish heritage and his community, most are likely to remember him as the host of one of television’s most outlandish and shocking shows. What that says about us and our culture, however, is more important than what it says about him.

Jerry Springer died yesterday at the age of 79 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Gene Galvin, a family spokesperson and longtime friend of Springer's, recalled how, quote,

0:28.9

Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried,

0:34.2

whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who

wanted a photo or a word. End quote. Chances are, however, that most will remember Springer in a

political career to an almost indescribably outlandish broadcast career with the Jerry Springer show,

0:59.3

which by the mid-1990s was setting a new standard for tawdryness on American television,

1:05.8

turning the talk show format into an arena for shocking confessions,

1:10.4

adultery-fueled screaming matches, and not

1:13.1

in frequent fistfights. End quote. So, which was the real Jerry Springer? The answer seems to have

1:20.0

been a bit of both. By all accounts, Springer remained faithful to his Jewish heritage, and, as

1:26.1

his rabbi describes, was someone who never

1:29.1

lost sight of his roots, he understood the great fortune that his family had in escaping

1:34.0

Germany and ending up in England and then moving here. He would routinely help MC interfaith

dialogues, meet with high school kids, and speak at local men's events for his

synagogue in Cincinnati. Yet the reason he was able to draw a crowd in doing so ties back to the

1:52.1

public persona he developed across his adult life. While Jerry Springer is best known for the show

1:58.3

that bears his name, his first foray into the public eye came when he

won a position on the Cincinnati City Council in 1971. He'd graduated with a law degree from
