Hello from Milwaukee, I'm Chuck Todd. This is the Chuck Todd cast. So I'm coming to you today from the site of the Republican National Convention.

To be specific, I'm staring at some giant vax of beer.

Because we're in the Good City Brewery just across the street from the Five Surge Center,

home of your Milwaukee Bucks, of course.

And the news has been coming fast since we all saw the assassination attempt on former President

Trump this Saturday.

So let me try to quickly catch you up.

Trump officially now is the Republican nominee, no more word presumptive.

On Monday he picked a running mate it's Ohio Senator J.D. Vance somewhat surprising.

I think it as I said in my column which you can read on writing every day from the

convention here. This is a pick of

confidence from from Trump. He believes he already has this election in the bag.

This is about an heir apparent. This is about somebody he sees as the future of the Trump movement and in many ways perhaps

the more articulate spokesperson for Trump populism.

He is an economic nationalist. He is an international isolationist a bit, if you will.

I'm sure some would take issue with being sort of so binary in those descriptions, but essentially this party has moved a long way from where the through line of Eisenhower or Romney is gone.

You know, essentially had Pat Buchanan won the presidency in 1992, this is where

perhaps the Republican Party would have headed then. It didn't and instead this is where it's headed today a

fascinating decision and I think you're gonna hear it was I'm still also

stunned less by where Trump's tried to take the party and more just how the

Teamsters president spoke on Monday night and it was a speech that would have felt at

home in 1984 and Walter Mondale's Convention in San Francisco.
