Summary

The election is over, but climate progress doesn't have to be. How can we continue to push for equitable climate policies and defend current investments in clean energy? What are the state and local avenues for addressing the climate crisis?

In this live episode of A Matter of Degrees, Dr. Leah Stokes is joined by Adrian Deveny, the Former Director of Energy and Environmental Policy for Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer. Leah and Adrian talk through what the results of the 2024 election mean for the future of our planet and how we can keep moving forward.

Mentioned in this episode is the All We Can Save Project's facilitation guide for coming together in community during this moment.

Hi, Catherine. Hi, Leah. How are you holding up? I feel pretty shattered from the results of the election. Heartbroken, definitely scared. This is not a good outcome for people and the planet. And I am still trying to make sense of it all. You know, I am too. I've spent my life working on climate change,

0:21.6

and Donald Trump calls the climate crisis a scam and a hoax. The most disturbing thing is that he has

0:28.7

detailed plans to grind climate progress to a halt as we talked about on our recent episode on

0:35.6

Project 2025. So he is a threat to so much of what we have

0:40.0

worked so hard for. And I'm feeling this for all of that climate progress and all the

0:47.8

climate progress we needed to make in the next administration, but so much more, right? He ran on a platform of grievance,

0:55.6

hate, division, and it's really terrifying to think of all the harms that communities are going

1:01.0

to face in the coming years. There is a lot on the line. And if there's one thing that's clear,

1:07.3

it's that we have our work cut out for us. There's a lot of work ahead. But I think it's

1:14.1

also worth just, you know, before we jump into strategy and tactics, to take a pause, to feel the

1:23.7

rage, the grief, the fear, to connect with each other, to build community, and to try to

1:29.4

wrap our hearts and minds around the situation we now find ourselves in.

1:33.4

That's such an important point, Catherine, because, you know, whatever the next steps are,

1:37.9

we have to take them together as a united climate movement.

1:42.1

We need each other more than ever. And the All We Can Save Project

1:46.5

released a facilitation guide for those who want to come together in community to process this

1:52.2

moment, right, to try to make sense of what happened. And we've got a link for that resource in the show

1:58.1

notes. So today we're going to attempt some of that sense making

2:02.5

by trying to understand what just happened last week and what the election means for the future

2:08.4

of our planet. And to do that, I sat down with my good friend Adrian Devaney for a live event at

2:14.2

UC Santa Barbara just after the election. Adrian spent 13 years working in the

2:19.5

United States Senate, most recently as the Director of Energy and Environmental Policy for Senate
