What the Cross Teaches Us About Grief and Trust: John 19:  Daily Devotional, Daily Bible Study In this episode, Rachael Groll sits with the weight of John chapter 19 and the deep emotions that come with Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion. She talks about what it feels like to face situations where we have no control, the kind of grief that knocks the wind out of us, and the unexpected ways God meets us in those places. Rachael highlights Jesus’ obedience and calm authority in the middle of unimaginable pain and shows how His posture becomes a model for our own faith. This conversation invites listeners to trust God’s plan even when it doesn’t make sense, to surrender what they cannot carry, and to look for God’s purpose in seasons that feel confusing and heavy. ☆Pick up a copy of my latest book:  Knowing God’s Voice  ☆Go Deeper and Learn to Hear God’s Voice: Knowing Jesus Course ☆Get Ad-Free Episodes, Bonus Content, and more here:  patreon.com/HearingJesus ☆To Learn More About Sponsoring a Child, check out Compassion International here:  ➤  Sponsor a Child ☆Go on a trip with Rachael: Bible Study Live ☆Have a question for Rachael? Grief can stem from others' choices or circumstances. Jesus shows us how to surrender and trust God. God's plan unfolds even in impossible situations. Pilate's authority was given by God, showing divine permission. Jesus' obedience is an invitation to trust God. Even in suffering, we can care for others. Jesus' words on the cross signify fulfillment of prophecy. The cross exemplifies God's redemptive plan. Trusting God means surrendering control and timing. Hey friends, I'm Rachel Grohl and I'm your host for the Hearing Jesus podcast, where I help you to know God and to make him known.

One of the hardest things that I have both personally walked through and also walk through with other people is those moments in life where we feel powerless. And, you know,

0:23.1

that can happen in a lot of different ways. Sometimes we go through these situations that are basically

0:29.3

the results of other people's choices. Sometimes it's circumstantial. You know, anytime you're

0:35.2

walking with people through things like grief, you know,

0:38.2

grief over other people's choices or grief over loss and death, those kinds of things,

0:43.9

it can be really hard for us to face those things, especially when we feel like it's not fair.

0:49.2

And I think it's a natural part of the human experience to question, like, Lord, where are you in this? And what I think I want to

0:58.7

focus in on, on John chapter 19, is that place. We're going to watch Jesus, who remember,

1:06.9

he's innocent, and he's now facing a trial, and he's being mocked, and we know that that's

1:13.0

leading to death.

1:14.9

And yet, in the middle of his suffering, he shows us a way to surrender and trust the Lord.

1:21.5

And it's beautiful, and it's hard, but it's the reality of what happens when we live in the brokenness of the world

1:30.6

that is run by sin. And so I want you just kind of keep the question in your mind as we read and

1:38.5

study today. How does God's plan unfold even when it feels like things are impossible,

1:46.0

and you know that they're unfair and it feels overwhelming. Those are the kinds of moments we're looking at today. And so I'm going to

1:51.8

read verses 1 through 16 and then we'll talk about it. We're going to do all of John 19 today,

1:56.3

but I do still want to break it up a couple different sections to help us make sure we're not

2:00.8

missing anything. So verses 1 through 16. So Pilate then took Jesus and had him flogged.

2:08.8

And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on his head and put a purple cloak on him.

2:15.4

And they repeatedly came up to him and said, Hail, king of the Jews,

2:19.2

and slapped him in the face again and again. And then Pilate came out again and said to them,
