this is recode media with peter kofka that is me i hope you're well this is the first podcast I've recorded since the riot at the Capitol, and I'm nowhere near close to sorting out what I think about what happened there and how I feel about it and how we got here and what's coming next. I think that's going to be the case for some time. So I'm kind of thinking through some of this stuff out loud on today's show with the help of some really smart guests.

First up, I talked to the New York Times, Kevin Ruse, who's an excellent chronicler of social media and its impact on its users and society.

on YouTube, but really on the internet in general. Today, Kevin and I talked about a column he wrote

for The Times about the power that Twitter and Facebook and the rest of Big Tech have in our lives,

how we saw that illustrated by the de-platforming of Donald Trump and Parlor over the course of a couple

days.

And Kevin and I talked about sort of what tech doesn't do with that power.

What hope the rest of us have in changing that power that tech has, whether we want to change it,
