Summary

In the wake of the Michigan football team's blowout loss to No. 1 Ohio State, we break down what the loss mean, key takeaways and how the gap between the two programs looks in the future.

We open by looking at how far back the talent and success differential between the two programs goes, exploring the decade before Jim Harbaugh was hired for both the Wolverines (who went 73-53) and the Buckeyes (who went 110-21), and what went wrong for Michigan. We also evaluate how Harbaugh has helped the Wolverines narrow the gap, and how they haven't in many ways.

We also look at the game specifically, and which mistakes were the most troubling moving forward for Michigan. We dissent on how the Wolverines should handle their defense heading into the offseason, and also look at where the biggest talent gaps in the next couple years will be.

I'm the head, Zach Shaw.

Steve Lorenz here with me, and, oh, you better believe we are ready for our basketball podcast, but it's not coming this episode.

It would be a disservice to our football fanatics to do Michigan, to not do a Michigan-Ohio State

0:23.3

recap, a little bit of a season and review.

0:25.7

We'll have more time to do season and review once maybe some of the postseason awards come

0:31.7

out once the bowl destination and the bowl game happens.

0:36.8

But we definitely got to talk about this game and kind of what it

0:40.1

means. And Steve, we might as well just start with the pressing topics. Clearly there is a

0:47.9

difference between what Ohio State is doing and what Michigan is doing. So we'll do a little

0:52.6

bit of a two-part discussion here looking at how did it get this way

0:57.1

and how if there is a way, Michigan can close that gap on its own side, not Ohio State falling off.

1:06.9

Is that even possible?

1:08.0

So first, starting with the how, I wrote a story kind of about Michigan's last 15 years and how it's been good. It has not been great. And that really makes fans miserable because after a while, good stops feeling good because you see other teams doing great. And here's the stat that I think is the killer, is from 2005 to the end of 2014, Ohio State went 110 and 21.

1:35.6

So they averaged 11 and 2, basically.

1:39.2

From 2005 to 2014, Michigan went 73 and 53, averaging just to shade over 7 and 5.

1:51.1

So I guess, you know, it's easy to, it's easy to just throw dartboards at Rich Rodriguez and

1:56.9

Brady Hoke in that they weren't effective coaches.

2:00.6

But from your experience, Steve, was there anything else?

2:04.7

I mean, because Lloyd Carr had a couple of down seasons when Ohio State started trending

2:09.4

upward.

2:11.2

You know, from, you know, he won in 2003, but other than that, I think that was, what,
