Or is mankind just a fluke in a meaningless universe?

concur in teaching that the human race has a central place in the divine plan.

In the book of Genesis, the six days of creation culminate in the creation of human beings.

And only humans of all creatures are said to be made in the image of God.

St. Paul tells the Ephesians that they were chosen by God

and destined to be his sons and daughters, quote,

before the foundation of the world.

On the other hand, we often are told by atheists that science has shown that

the universe has no purpose at all and that the human race is just an accidental byproduct

of blind material forces. Steven Weinberg, who is an eminent particle physicist,

he's in my field, he's sort of the number one person in my field,

expressed this view in a famous passage in his popular book,

The First Three Minutes, which was written, I think, in 1971.
