Summary

When Ohio State back-doored its way into the College Football Playoff last season Ryan Day vowed that the world would see a more aggressive side of him and his program. Then he backed it up against Georgia, even if it still led to a one-point loss. But that game breathed new life into the program's future under Day while also setting a new standard for what to expect from his teams. The first three games haven't required that version of him to come out. But heading into a top-10 matchup with Notre Dame on the road, it may be finally time to bring that side out. On this Thursday Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Bard and Andrew Gillis talk about Day's approach to Saturday's game plus a discussion about what else Day and Jim Knowles may be ready to unleash in a talent-equated matchup. Dame at Notre Dame on Saturday at 7 o'clock on NBC. And we definitely start with day stuff.

But just listening back and also just listening live, I thought Nathan would Jim Knowles had

0:50.0

to say was maybe a little bit more interesting at times. And maybe he just teased us with some

0:54.0

of the stuff he had to say. But whether it was I asked him about the sunny styles stuff

0:59.5

and maybe he might be moving around going forward, you were asking about, you know, pressure

1:03.3

and defensive line play. But he kind of teased the Jack. I don't know. Do we? In a way

1:10.9

that was like messing with us, but also this would be the game, right Nathan? This would

1:16.5

be if they're going to use the Jack at all. This would be the game to bring it out.

1:20.3

I mean, maybe it is more of a run defense mechanism than it is a pass rush mechanism.

1:28.0

I think that's always been a little bit misunderstood. But it's very hard to say with any certainty

1:33.9

because we just don't know how much they've really been practicing it. We didn't see it

1:36.7

in our small glimpses of the preseason camp. And some of that is Mitchell Melton and what

1:43.7

they've been doing with him trying to weave him back into maybe being more of a conventional

1:48.0

defensive end. So I'm very much not going to go out on the Jack limb. It's certainly

1:53.4

something to have in the back of our minds as we approach this game. But it's not something

1:57.9

that I'm ready to proclaim will be a big part. It is, I think it is though. And I tried

2:03.7

to ask Ryan Day about this after the game and in a way, kind of that mix between getting

2:10.8

your foundation set over the first three games and building your identity, the balance

2:18.4

of that and then holding something back. And we think they've done that on offense. And
