Summary

Congress is supposed to have a legal right to tour ICE detention centers and provide oversight on these facilities, where 32 people died in 2025. But this representative’s attempt to tour a facility in her New Jersey district led to her being charged with assaulting a federal officer and facing a 17-year prison sentence.

Guest:  LaMonica McIver is the U.S. representative for New Jersey's 10th congressional district.

Of all the images from the last few weeks that have stuck with me,

0:09.8

it's the one of Liam Ramos I just keep thinking about.

0:13.6

You remember Liam, right?

0:15.4

The five-year-old kid in the blue hat with the floppy ears.

0:19.0

The one who was reportedly used as bait

0:22.2

to lure adults into the Minnesota cold.

0:25.7

The one who was detained with his dad.

0:29.4

0:32.9

I've bought those floppy hats for my own kids.

0:36.5

But last week, there was a new image to replace the one

0:39.9

that stirred up all that nostalgia. This image showed Liam lying in a supine position in his

0:46.4

father's arms. He had this kind of glazed expression, as much as I could tell. I remember it

0:53.1

from my own kid's worst fevers. This picture, it was taken in immigration detention.

1:00.3

And the only reason we ever saw this troubling image is because Congresspeople paid Liam a visit.

1:08.9

This visit, this image, it's probably part of the reason that over the weekend,

1:13.6

Liam and his dad were released by a judge.

1:17.6

A congressional representative accompanied them home to Minneapolis.

1:21.6

Representative Ilhan Omar met them at the airport.

1:24.6

It all just underlines how important congressional oversight can be

1:30.7

to immigrants in detention. So last week, with that jarring shot of Liam looking so ill on my

1:38.4

mind, I called up a congressperson to talk about her oversight role and what images like this one can do.

1:48.9

I'm wondering, Congresswoman, does this kind of image surprise you when you see it?
