Summary

It's easy to caricature those on the political far right as outlandish, cartoonish, and bizarre, and easier still to dismiss their agendas as irrational or uninformed. This, however, can be a tremendous mistake. Assessing political rivals requires not just learning the history of their influences and principles, but also remembering that they are real people. In this episode, Adam speaks with Corey Robin, Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College, to learn the history of where the far right movement emerged from, and what we can learn from evaluating them honestly. But I'm gonna hazard a guess that if you're listening or watching right now

You're probably not a hard right winger right

0:43.2

gonna go out on a limb and guess that you're not a

0:53.3

Now for those of us who are not those people who are not on the far right of political discourse

0:58.4

in this country, it's really easy to caricature those who are.

1:03.0

The far right can make for easy comedy, you know, they're outlandish, cartoonish, and bizarre,

1:07.4

make fun of Lauren Bobert for you know grabbing the guy during the Beatlesju show.

1:11.4

It's funny, but it's often a real mistake to do that because right

1:16.3

wingers are in fact real people and understanding how they think what their

1:22.3

influences are what their influences are, what their principles are, why they do what they do, and why it seems rational from their perspective.

1:29.0

Well, that's very important, and we make a mistake when we do not treat them with that level of frankly respect.

1:36.1

Take Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for instance. He's really easy to caricature.

1:40.4

I've done it myself. You can talk about him as a cranky corrupt old man. He doesn't even bother to ask questions. He just always votes on the side of the people who want to erode some basic right or take rights away from people who've had them for a century.

1:54.0

But that's an enormous mistake.
