Summary

Scripture study is the soul of theology—but all is not well with Scripture scholarship today. Scott Hahn is joined by Rob Corzine to talk about the right and wrong ways to read Scripture. Warning: heavy theology. “Where exegesis is not theology, Scripture cannot be the soul of theology, and conversely, where theology is not essentially the interpretation of the Church’s Scripture, such a theology no longer has a foundation.” —Pope Benedict XVI    Learn More The Decline and Fall of Sacred Scripture: How the Bible Became a Secular Book by Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker Politicizing the Bible: The Roots of Historical Criticism and the Secularization of Scripture 1300-1700 by Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker Modern Biblical Criticism as a Tool of Statecraft (1700-1900) by Scott Hahn and Jeffrey Morrow “Biblical Interpretation in Crisis”, a lecture by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration by Pope Benedict XVI Jesus of Nazareth: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection by Pope Benedict XVI

Rob, welcome. So good to be here and so good to be talking about this,

which I think is really kind of close to the center of our mission. Around here we talk a lot

1:21.0

about reading scripture from the heart of the church. And the church itself talks about

1:27.0

the study of scripture as the soul of theology,

1:31.5

but as we know well, not as all well, either in the world of theology or in the world of

1:37.2

scripture study. And some of that has to do with the way that people read scripture.

1:42.5

Now, you've spoken and written a lot about this subject over the years,

1:46.0

including in your newest book, The Decline and Fall of Sacred Scripture, how the Bible became a

secular book. Now, that book tells a story about how some of the current difficulties came to

some time and have you clarify what the problem is and take us through some of the basic

distinctions that you make in the introduction of that book. And we often hear modern scholars

contrast what they do as academics with pre-critical or pre-scientific methods
