Summary

What should a pastor do when a child sincerely wants to be baptized in Jesus’ name, but a parent refuses to give consent? In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, UPCI General Superintendent Dr. David K. Bernard offers biblical and pastoral guidance for one of the most sensitive situations a church may face. Apostolic Pentecostals believe baptism is part of the biblical plan of salvation described in Acts 2:38, but pastors must also consider the God-given authority of parents, ...

We're naturally very passionate about fulfilling the Great Commission, and we've made no bones

0:15.0

about it, to put it frankly, that we're, baptism is very important.

0:18.0

We consider that to be part of the plan of salvation. So you go to a

0:21.6

UPCI church, the pastor is going to preach about baptism. He's going to urge you to be baptized

0:25.6

if you haven't been baptized before. So that leads to sometimes a conundrum for pastors because we're

0:31.6

very interested in ministering to people of all ages, including children. So on many occasions, the situation arises where a child

0:41.9

expresses the desire to be baptized in Jesus' name. But for whatever reason, often it's when

0:47.9

the parents are not in the church, the parent prohibits the child from, the pastor from

0:52.8

baptizing the child. So it puts the pastor in a tough

0:55.8

spot because they want to minister to the child. They want to see that child saved if that kid

1:00.8

is old enough that they feel like that they're they have responsibility or they're able to

1:05.7

take responsibility for their spiritual condition. You know, their question arises, then what should a pastor do in that

1:12.7

situation? You probably encountered this yourself. How did you navigate situations like that?

1:18.5

The short answer is I think we need to obtain parental consent to baptize a minor. Now, there's a

1:27.2

conflict of values, you might say. On the one hand,

1:31.4

we do believe baptism is part of salvation. And so we're concerned if somebody isn't baptized,

1:37.5

they're not going to be saved. On the other hand, we do respect the right appearance. And we

1:42.7

respect the government. So let's look at that point first.

1:46.1

First of all, we do respect parental rights. That's clear in the Bible that children should obey

1:54.0

their parents. And there's a related principle. Jesus gave us the golden rule, do unto others as you

1:59.1

would have them do unto you. So let's say we're a parent.
