I'm Tony Bruske. Let's dig in. Anoka State Hospital located in Anoka, Minnesota, opened its doors

in 1900 with the lofty ambition of providing care for the mentally ill. At the time, the country

was still in the throes of experimenting with psychiatric care.

Mental illness was poorly understood, and treatments were often barbaric. Shock therapy,

restraints, and isolation were common methods used to cure the troubled minds that came through

the hospital's doors.

The hospital was initially established as a progressive institution,

a refuge from the squalid conditions of other mental health facilities

that were known for overcrowding and harsh practices.

At the turn of the century, the idea was to offer a place of healing

with the goal of returning patients to society when possible.
