0:19.0	When I was a kid I did Boy Scouts. We had to memorize the 12 Boy Scout laws and I could recite these things in less than three seconds during my hey day.
0:28.0	But here's what they are. A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and
0:38.0	reverent. That last one's kind of funny, isn't it, reverent? Because today we revel in irreverence.
0:45.0	It doesn't matter if it's Saturday Night Live or the President's Twitter feed.
0:50.0	We love to smash each other's sacred cows to deconstruct our most time-tested
0:56.4	traditions and values. It's often done in a spirit of play because the truth is
1:01.7	few things seem more ridiculous to modern eyes than
1:06.4	reverence.
1:08.0	Reverence for tradition, systems, symbols.
1:11.6	Now my point here isn't that we need to harken back to some good old days where people
1:17.0	were reverent. Some people in the 1800s might have been very reverent about George Washington
1:23.5	while they irreverently whipped the backs of their slaves.
1:27.5	See, we've never done reverence well.
1:31.7	So when we read a story like 2nd Samuel 6,
1:35.1	it has a tendency to strike us as being strange
1:38.5	and even a little bit unfair.
