made to yourself. Hi, I'm Dave. I've been walking for fitness since 2013, averaging 21,000 steps a

I'm not walking at this precise moment because I'm watching a beaver. I'm alongside

the lake behind our community and there is a beaver probably 10 yards away from me in a part

of the lake and he just went underneath the water. He's been swimming back and forth.

At one point, he flapped his tail, made a loud noise, and then dipped under the water.

This time he silently went under the water. All right, so let's start walking.

So yeah, fitness chain.

Great idea, great motivational tool, but what happens when it breaks?

Now, if you're brand new to this podcast and you're wondering, what's a fitness chain?

It's an idea that I got from Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian, who early in his career made a commitment, made a promise to write a joke every day, at least one joke every day.

He hung a calendar on the wall, and when he finished writing the joke, he would put a big X on that particular day.

And so he had a chain, a chain going.

And writing comedy is hard.

I've done it before.

He used to work for a Baltimore disc jockey.

This was early in my career, and he had a feature on his morning radio show

called The Little News of the Morning,

and it was basically a five-minute newscast

that was just jokes,
