here's a way of describing it, remaining corruption.

We need categories like this, because if you don't know that category remaining corruption,

you are hyper naive about yourself.

John Piper walks us through Romans 7 verses 7 to 12

to help us understand what theologians call

remaining corruption, the sin that still lives in us

even after we've been born again. And unless we have a category for that,

we're going to be confused and discouraged by what we see in our own hearts. This message was

originally delivered at Bethlehem Baptist Church on April 8, 2001.

The question today I want to ask is, how does the law help me know me as a sinner?

And I'll just see again from last week, I'm assuming here this is good for me and you and our church,

and our families and our marriages and our parenting and our friends and our jobs. It is so good for us to know who we are as sinners.

This is very much against the grain I know of contemporary ra-rah American Christianity.

And I'm telling you, this is precious. This is sweet. Let's read these two verses and get into it.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? This is verse 7 of chapter 7. Is the law sin? So he's defending law now. You can hear the

accusation. You've made the law out to be sin. He answers, may it never be. On the contrary, I would have not come to no sin except through the law.

For I would not have known about coveting if the law had not said, you shall not covet.
