Summary
I want to talk about a mysterious, often nebulous word that pervades the halls of herbal medicine β¦ "tonic." What does "tonic" mean anyway? This is a question that has come up for me over and over throughout my years of studying herbal medicine. I took some time to think it through and make sense of the many possible meanings for myself, and I want to share my findings with you.

| 1:14.6 | I mean, tonic is one of those things that's like, oh, well, in this context, it seems to mean this. |

| 1:29.4 | And they got the Chinese way of seeing it and the traditional Western thing is it. |
| 1:32.5 | It was like, what, what's the dotted line that connects all these seemingly very random and disparate ways of seeing and understanding this word? |

| 1:45.8 | Because even comparing Western definition of tonic to the eastern use of the term, they seem |
| 1:52.9 | very different. But even within Western herbalism, I think there's some variance among or in terms of what this word means. |
