Summary
Benjamin Franklin famously said, "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." And even though we are all going to die (Hebrews 9:27), we try not to think about the inevitability of death.
But it would serve our hearts, souls, and minds well to consider death—especially in light of what the Bible promises.
As Dr. Jim Denison with the Denison Forum considers what the Bible says about death, he answers these questions:
- Why do we need to face death today?
- Why does God permit death?
- And how can we be ready for death?
You need not fear death. For the Christian believer, "the worst that can happen to you is the best that can happen to you."

| 0:33.9 | What does the Bible say about death? |
| 0:36.3 | You know, I've always been told all my life. |
| 0:37.3 | There are two sure things. Texas and death. I'm not so sure about taxes, but I'm pretty sure that death. You know, I've always been told all my life there, two sure things. Taxes and death. I'm not so |
| 0:39.2 | sure about taxes, but I'm pretty sure that death is definitely a sure thing. Most of us tend to |
| 0:45.2 | avoid the subject. It's difficult to really talk about. Why do we need to face that topic |
| 0:52.9 | today? Yeah, you're right. It is something we avoid if we can. I've done obviously a lot of funerals over the years as a pastor. And people typically say of the deceased, they're the deceased or the dearly deceased or they passed away. They went on to a better place, all of that. But don't like the word death. It's just kind of a euphemism that we're around these days. And we're at a place now where as a culture, we're not around it as much as previous generations would have been more people die in hospitals. You know, they die in places that are not around their families and all of that. And yet it's an unescapable consequence of life. Hebrews 927 says it's appointed unto all men wants to die, and then the judgment. |
| 1:29.3 | Unless the Lord comes home first, unless he comes back for us to take us home first, all of us, each of us, are going to face death one day. |
| 1:36.3 | And the only way to be prepared to die is to make that decision now. I can't put that off to tomorrow because I'm not promised tomorrow. |
| 1:43.3 | I remember Chris, when I was pastoring in Atlanta to tomorrow because I'm not promised tomorrow. I remember Chris, |
| 1:44.7 | when I was pastoring in Atlanta, there was a member of a church out there in the community who was |

| 1:55.3 | best he could. So he went around to the various churches in the area and spoke to the men's groups |
| 1:59.9 | and told them his story and urged |
| 2:02.8 | them to be ready for eternity, told them that he was making himself ready to meet the Lord, |
| 2:06.9 | to be with the Lord, and they needed to do the same thing, and they needed to be ready for eternity |
