Summary

When people suffer, compassion is one of the most relevant and practical ways that Christians can respond. As Dr. Randel Everett has said, "I have no right to preach the gospel to a hungry person."

  • What does it mean to be compassionate?
  • How is compassion different from pity?
  • Why does God ask us to be compassionate?
  • And how can we practice compassion for those who need it?

Dr. Jim Denison answers these questions, and shares a powerful story from Corrie Ten Boom, as he discusses what the Bible says about compassion.

Compassion comes from a Latin term, actually, that means to feel with is the idea.

Pity is to feel for somebody. If you feel

pity for them, as we say, then you wish things were different in their lives. You would change

things if you could, but you're not necessarily experiencing what they're experiencing. You're

1:04.2

not necessarily feeling their pain or their anguish, their sorrow, their loss. To have compassion

1:09.4

is to feel with them. It's to feel what they feel.

1:13.0

It's to go through what they're going through. You think about Jesus and John 11, standing at the

1:18.2

grave of Lazarus and weeping, not just feeling sorry for these sisters or for Lazarus, but

1:24.9

feeling what they're feeling, sharing their pain, sharing their grief,

1:28.9

and weeping as they weep. Well, that's compassion. Compassion is feeling what somebody else feels.

1:34.3

It's feeling with them, and that's the need and the gift of the day.

1:39.1

So why do you think compassion is such a high priority for God's people?
