| 0:00.0 | Thanks for listening to my call of the day podcast. You can hear my live radio program Monday through Friday from two to five PM Eastern time on serious XM. |
| 0:10.0 | I'm 11. Welcome to the program. I'm Dr. Laura. I'm here. Hi. What can I do for you? Hi. I'm so up. I'm 21 years old. I just had a question. I'm in my second to last year of college. |
| 0:26.0 | I'm majoring in English because I'm not really sure what I wanted to do. I know that I like to read and I like to write, but I don't really read it. |
| 0:35.0 | It's kind of like what I do. What I'm my least for subject. If you know what I mean. I feel like there are a lot of other requirements and stuff that the college is making me do that. I'm not so interested, but just a core to fill. |
| 0:48.0 | I'm doing what I need to do for English and then I'm doing like a bunch of other stuff that doesn't matter. So I'm just like kind of like thinking like what you think is like a good way to find what like you're supposed to do or want to do when you're like not really sure. |
| 1:06.0 | You wait. You have experiences and you wait at 21. I never would have guessed that I'd be here doing this with you. This was not on my radar. I was interested in medical sciences. |
| 1:27.0 | That's what I did in college and graduate school and then did postgraduate work to be here. Don't be in a rush to find your place. |
| 1:40.0 | Just get the degree done and that there are courses. You really don't want to be bothered by you have to take them anyway. It's just the price of admission and everything. |
| 1:51.0 | You don't like the course. You learn something. You'd be amazed at the little bits of information that no matter what ultimate career you have an astronaut neurosurgeon, a baseball player, whatever it is that you're going to be doing. |
| 2:07.0 | You'll be able to use little scraps of everything you've experienced throughout your whole life. I pull from all the things that I've ever learned. |
| 2:18.0 | And I really liked humanities courses, got straight A's and all of them loved them. Sociology, all of it. It's fun, writing, instructive, discipline, information. It's all good. |
| 2:35.0 | There is no reason in the world at 21. You have to know who you are. |
| 2:42.0 | But what do you like to do? I don't care. Well, you'll have to do something because you'll have to earn money to support yourself. So at a desperation, you'll take some kind of a job and do something. |
| 2:59.0 | And that's something will lead to something else will lead to something else. And one day you're going to go, my destiny came and got me. I didn't plan to be doing what I'm doing today. I need you to hear me. I need you to hear me. |
| 3:15.0 | I need you to just not wine the same thing over and over again. I need you to listen. |
| 3:22.0 | I never planned to be here doing what I'm doing. Never. This was a total accident. |
| 3:32.0 | And the reason I'm trying to make sure you hear that is you seem to be hell bent on there's something you have to know now. |
| 3:45.0 | Yeah, necessarily. Some people do. Most people don't. I didn't get on this track till I was 35. |
| 3:58.0 | Well, yeah, but it's just like. Yeah, but I've never like been like outside of like school before, you know, it's just. Well, this is the real world and it's going to be challenging and it's nervous making. You're having totally normal emotions. |
| 4:16.0 | There's a tremendous amount of security and knowing everything that's going to happen and everything you're going to be doing. It just doesn't work that way. |
| 4:25.0 | Yeah, it's just like crazy that to think that like what I want to do is not what I'm going to be doing later. It's just like, you know. |
| 4:36.0 | You never know. Something could just pop into your life and you go, my God, I never gave that any consideration. And I would love that. |
