What does it mean to train up a child? I have six kids, and as a Christian father,

there's nothing that I want more for my children than that they know and follow and love

Jesus. The Bible calls us as parents to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the

Lord. That's Ephesians chapter 6, verse 4. Especially there, it's a charge given to dads. Fathers,

you play a key role in your child's discipleship. The spiritual formation of our children

isn't first and foremost the responsibility of a priest or pastor or youth pastor, even though they

can play a very important role. It's our responsibility as dads and moms. One of the verses that

is often discussed in line with this is Proverbs chapter 22 verse 6, train up a child

in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Okay, so what does this

look like and does it mean that if you raise your kids the right way, they'll end up loving

Jesus? So the first thing I want to highlight for you is that the word train up was sometimes used in the Old Testament for dedicating or consecrating something.

One thing that this suggests is that our children belong to God first and foremost.

This is probably one of the reasons that the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 7 describes children

of believers as holy, which I take to mean dedicated to the worship of God.
