We hear a lot about

0:04.0

a lot about deep watering our plants, right? Give it a nice deep water.

0:18.0

Give it an inch of water. Give it a foot of water. No one knows really what that means because it's actually quite vague, right?

0:26.1

And I think it's almost vague on purpose, but that doesn't help you, the gardener,

0:30.5

actually know what we're talking about when we say get it a deep amount into the

0:36.1

soil deep water that thing right deep water that sucker so what does it mean well

0:41.2

genetics will kind of determine. The plants that like it are the ones that have a deep root system. For example, things like beats, radishes, they have a relatively deep root system, but that's shallow compared

0:56.8

to other things. Things like tomatoes, beans, potatoes, those are 18 inches deep. Those you want to know roughly how deep the roots of your

1:06.1

plants go and then adjust your watering based on that. So you know lettuce is going to need

1:10.7

less of a deep watering than tomatoes are. And so that's the first

1:15.9

variable at play. The next variable at play is the type of soil you have. Is your soil

sandy? Boom, your deep watering is going to be really easy and in fact too easy because

the water will actually drain straight down and go away from the root zone eventually.

1:29.4

In silty soil, you will have it, it's basically just the middle right smaller particles

1:35.7

smaller air pour spaces the water will get down there a lot easier than our next

1:41.6

type of soil but also will drain away. Then you've got

1:44.7

clay soil, it'll take a long time to even get it to a deep water. In fact, you may have to come

1:49.8

back and let it soak in afterwards, like 15 minutes or so. So how long should you

1:55.1

water? Well this is a good recipe to know. Here's how to determine, right? Water for

2:01.8

about 15 minutes or so. Wait until the next day, the next actual day.

2:08.0

Then take a shovel straight down where you watered and then take a chunk of soil out and keep doing that

2:14.8

until you actually get to where the soil is dry and then just make a note and so
