In this podcast, we’re going to talk about stress and fat. What determines if you lose or gain weight with stress?
Does stress cause weight gain, or does stress cause weight loss? It all depends on what is happening with your cortisol and insulin.

0:48.0 | yet other people gain weight when they go through stress? |
0:51.0 | We're going to talk about exactly why that is. There's two hormones involved. One is cortisol, and the |
0:56.4 | other is insulin. Insulin is the hormone that converts glucose into fat. It will store the excess glucose as fat. |
1:05.0 | Okay? |
1:07.0 | Coruscule is a stress hormone. |
1:11.0 | It's activated by stress. And what that does is it mobilizes glucose. It will |

1:25.5 | protein and fat into glucose. But here's the big point. |
1:30.0 | Acute stress or short-term stress inhibits insulin. |
1:35.4 | It lowers insulin. |
1:37.3 | So you have the situation, |
1:38.8 | we have all this glucose in the blood |
1:40.8 | so the body can use it because you're being chased by the tiger because if you had high insulin |
1:46.2 | that would not be good for survival because it would lower your fuel that you needed to get away from the attacker or the lion that's chasing you. |
1:56.5 | So short-term acute stress decreases insulin. |
2:00.8 | So that means that you would lose weight because insulin is not increased, but long-term |
2:07.3 | chronic stress, it will increase insulin. |
2:10.7 | And this is why some people gain weight with cortisol. It all depends on what's happening with insulin. |
