Back in 2017, a major food controversy erupted in France.

The media would dub it, cous cous gait.

Yes, the technique of adding gait to a word, name a scandal, has crossed the Atlantic.

But this was more than just a silly food argument, like the original gait scandal, water

gait.

Cous cous gait was actually very political.

Samia Basile is a reporter in Paris.

She brought us this story.

As she explains, it started with a member of the French parliament named Florian Philippo.

Florian Philippo was a vice president of the National Front, the main French Far-Rite

Party.

A few months after an election, a Far-Rite activist published a picture with Florian Philippo

and a few other people on Twitter.

They were eating what appears to be a delicious cous cous.

Cous cous is a dish that comes from the Berbers, an ethnic group in North Africa.

It's semolina that's been rolled and steamed, topped with a stew of vegetables and meat

or fish.

Because of its origin, some people here in France view it as a symbol of immigration,

more specifically, North African immigration.

So when this photo went up, some supporters of the National Front sighed as an endorsement

of that immigration.
