Summary

Scripture sheds much light on the topic of forgiveness. But what if someone doesn't seek our forgiveness or is unrepentant? Certainly we have all, at some point or another, asked that question and likely wrestled with the answer. But perhaps there's other questions we might also ask: Should we not imitate the Lord's own forgiveness towards us? Are we compelled to forgive others who offend our name? Does God withhold his forgiveness until we repent? If God did not spare his only Son, can we not spare our own self-righteous pride and clothe ourselves in humility and grace? It's tricky answering these questions perfectly as fallible people but Aimee & Todd tackle them with care. The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals would like to give you a free MP3 download of a message entitled "Repentance and Forgiveness of Sin" by Rebecca Pippert.

0:47.3

We are so glad that you chose to join us today.

0:49.9

My name is Todd Pruitt, and I'm joined, as always, with Amy Bird.

0:53.7

Carl Truman cannot be with us because he, I think, is on the other side of the planet somewhere, even as we speak. But we are delighted that you chose to be with us today. Well, Amy, I want us to hop right into our topic today, which is forgiveness. Now, forgiveness is a big, broad subject. We are people who are

1:16.0

all about forgiveness because we are forgiven people. But one question I'm asked a lot as a pastor

1:22.3

is, what do I do with someone who refuses to acknowledge that they've done something wrong?

1:29.8

What do I, what do I do, or how do I forgive, or am I supposed to forgive someone who has offended me, but they've refused to repent?

1:40.2

In those cases, is forgiveness possible?

1:44.0

I'm asked about that a lot because we deal with those kinds of situations a lot as

1:48.4

people living among other sinful people.

1:52.3

What do you think about that question, where there's no repentance, can I forgive?

1:59.2

Yeah, so people like to go to Luke 17 versus 3 through 4 where, you know, the disciples are asking, well, if he repents seven times, you know, how many times is enough for me to forgive somebody if they keep offending me?

2:14.9

And so since Christ is saying, you know, if they repent, then you forgive 77

2:20.8

times. They say, well, if they don't repent, then I don't need to forgive at all. And so then there's

2:28.0

this sense of still holding that sin against them and harboring ill feelings towards them.

2:36.2

And I kind of want to say, well, there's a bigger picture going on here.

2:40.8

You can't have that transactional forgiveness that you so long for if someone doesn't repent.

2:47.1

You can't.

2:48.3

And that's sad.

2:49.4

And so that kind of leaves you hanging. But is it going to leave us
